@jetsa: I don't even track transactions! yikes!
@.twist.: is it an online based program? I totally just watched toe video and it looks like it would be perfect!

I was looking into this.. but my husband's custom spreadsheets are just about the same thing! Haha, we are pretty crazy with budgeting

@cheert16: I hadn't in over a year so your good! It's not really online based you download the program and then input your transactions. You just follow the category balances instead of your checking account.

@cheert16: Not online based. It's one of the reasons I was comfortable using it, because I do not need my banking linked anywhere else on the internet besides the bank it's associated with.
@dreamocracy: My original spread sheet was insanely detailed. I ended up going with this because I don't have to adjust hardly anything, entering amounts in cannot be miscalculated (unless I enter it wrong in the first place, but it's WAY easier to catch now). I mean, ultimately, if you have something that works for you already, then you are probably set.

@.twist.: We are currently doing a total 180 with our finances. And part of it is a new budgeting tool. I use excel now. I don't like Mint. So I was going to give this a try. Do I need to buy it on my home computer? or is a system I can access from multiple computers?
pineapple / 12802 posts
@Smurfette: I would buy it on the computer you will be using it on. It is software you have to download. You can download it again on another computer, but I would not download it onto, say, my work computer.

@.twist.: I usually do our banking first thing when I get to work, before I actually start work. But I wouldn't want a software on my computer. I will do it at home.

@dreamocracy: I used to have a really detailed spreadsheet too, but this program makes budgeting so much easier... and fun!
@Smurfette: Buy it on your home computer, but you can only access it from computers you download it to. Like I can't just type in a URL, login, and see my budget. It's a desktop app, not cloud based.

@Smurfette: You can use one of the apps too! They're free and user friendly.

@Mrs. High Heels: thanks for the info, I will show it to the hubs since he's the budgeter He was actually thinking of creating custom budget spreadsheets/software for people as a service since he has done it for a lot of family/friends. I'm just not a numbers person so I am glad he's talking care of it all

I've been quietly reading everyone's responses on the YNAB thread, and made the leap. Can't wait to install it tonight and check it out. Thanks for the link, @jetsa!

Is it really time consuming? We don't budget (tsk tsk, SO BAD, I know) and I'm lazy when it comes to stuff like tracking. Tracking ANYTHING (which is why I could never join Weight Watchers).
pineapple / 12802 posts
@HabesBabe: There is definitely tracking. The initial set up and learning curve may take a few weeks, but now that I'm more than a month in I can sit down for 10 - 15 mins once a week and get it all done. Honestly, I'm not great with tracking things either, but I have come to really ENJOY doing our budget and I often find myself checking it even when I don't need to or looking forward to entering certain things.

I just bought it and will get together with the hubs to start a budget. I have never budgeted before..Hopefully it will help us out!
Thanks@jetsa:

Interesting...Quick question- do you have to manually enter each transaction in (like a check book?) or does it pull information from your accounts and do it automatically?
pineapple / 12802 posts
@BabyMats: Good Luck! Their website has a LOT of resources so don't be afraid to go searching! It's very informative and helpful.
@travellingbee: Yes, you have to enter them. They do not sync with your bank in any way. There is an import feature, but your bank and YNAB will never be "linked".
grapefruit / 4663 posts
@travellingbee: you have to enter each transaction individually it will pull then from your account but you need to approve them. It wants you to be conscious of your spending

I'll have to echo the veterans to say that I think I'm in love with YNAB. Once you get the hang of it, it is so much more intuitive!
