DAMN. All the deals come out once I've already bought it. (Although that was quite a few months back, now, but still!)
BUY IT PEOPLE!

@TemperanceBrennan: @.twist.: I'm scared but DH is on board so here goes nothing. Bye bye excel sheets!

@jetsa: Don't be scared! It's a great thing. I was so happy to have ditched excel once I got the hang of YNAB! GOOD LUCK!

@.twist.: ha thanks. It'll be good for us I used to track our spending but then DS was born (last Sept!!) and I stopped bc my excel sheets were so time consuming & the last year has just been a free for all and we've got to get back on track.

@.twist.: one question, does YNAB dictate what you should pay on bills vs savings we are trying to be debt free so we pay a lot on bills and don't put much in savings, is this ok? I just budget what we sirens right?!?
pineapple / 12802 posts
@jetsa: You budget money you have already earned, as it comes in.
I didn't have to create a buffer with YNAB because I had already been living that sort of budget lifestyle for a while, so someone may have to correct me or add to my comment. But, I think for now, it's ok to forecast and build your buffer in the meantime.
But yea, basically you don't spend what you don't have. I just googled a budget breakdown and this website came up with a rough breakdown of what is recommended to spend in each major category.
Have you read any of the YNAB tutorials/rules?

@MrsTiz: omg! YAY! You read the quick start guide!:

Also, there are a few of us who love YNAB so, ask any and all questions!

@Danizaur: Ha, love this!
@MrsTiz: After you read the quick start guide, study the rules and take a class! I took a few and they helped me a ton: http://www.youneedabudget.com/support/training-and-education

Been using it 9 months and paid off 17000 in debt, and paid cash for every emergency (new roof, new car, new transmission in other car, etc). Love love love.

@DillonLion: Wow! Good for you!
I am nowhere near paying for a car with cash, but that sounds like an amazing place to be!

@.twist.: well, it was partially paid for with an insurance check

@DillonLion: That's really inspiring. A year of unemployment following stupid expensive grad school means I am drowning in debt. I need to find a way to be able to breathe again, and stop living paycheck to paycheck. Whoa boy I guess I better sign up....

@Skadi: I don't think there are a lot of differences. Mint.com (from my understanding, I've never used it) makes you upload your banking info. YNAB does not and is not online. Also, you "live on last months income" so you budget the money you have, rather than the money you are expected to have in the future (not sure if that second part is also part of mint).

Thanks for the tip! We've been doing the free trial of YNAB after several ladies were singing its praises a few weeks ago. I love it! And since I already budgeted for paying for the software this month, getting $30 off means we have an extra $30 to budget. Love it!

@.twist.: Same! Is there something wrong with us? Is it normal to be this excited about budgeting?!

@.twist.: do you think this is a good program to start a budget with? meaning we have never had a budget- its kind of just a free for all- and I would totally like to start saving more. Is this a good first step tool? or should I do something else first then this?
grapefruit / 4663 posts
@cheert16: we've never had a budget either! I used to track transactions but no trying to stay within any bounds.
pineapple / 12802 posts
@cheert16: I do, I think you are probably at an advantage because you haven't been forecasting your budget, like I was for so many years!
It's a pretty simple spread sheet, easy to use and the guides are very informative.
If anything, there is a free 34 day trial and it's definitely worth looking into to see if it would be something you found helpful.
I don't think it gets much easier than this. Even if you just used excel, you'd have to create the spreadsheet, do the math. This program does all that for you.
