Does anyone know where the best place to buy American Girl dolls would be? My niece just requested one for Christmas and I would love to get her one but I usually spend 50ish on each kid. Is there any way that can happen or is his a mission impossible? (: thanks in advance.

I think you can only buy them "officially" on their website or in the stores, but I'm not positive. There was recently a deal posted for a doll and set (book, outfit?) but I'm not sure if it's expired or not!

there are also unofficial American girl dolls if that would fly! 19" dolls at TRU, Target, etc.

Probably so unless it is secondhand. Could you go in on one with another relative? Or give a gift card towards a doll?
Target sells lookalike dolls that should fit your budget. This kept my nieces happy for a year or so until they saved up to buy their own "real" dolls.

Not going to find one for $50. I bought one with my own money in high school and it was at least $100. They are more expensive now. Some malls have the official store or you can order them.

Maybe if you bought it used, or one of the knock offs. My niece has the Target one and she doesn't even know the difference, of course she is only 5

@hellocupcake: I think the lookalikes look good to grownups, but kids KNOW the difference. Ya know?
I remember reading a case study about the American Girl store refusing to take a lookalike at their salon and mortifying a little girl in front of her friends. It's totally ridiculous, but that stuff matters when you are a preteen, -
I would split with someone and get the real thing. If that's what she asked for, she'll know the difference!
