I would love to do hand print ornaments for gifts this year (LO's first Christmas).
Any deals out there on these? So far I have found one at pottery barn for $15. However, I want to do one for us to keep, and one for each set of grandparents (maybe my sister as well). It all adds up, then add shipping too. I'd love to find quality kits for cheaper if possible.

I want to do this too, and am thinking I might just DIY with salt dough... It LOOKS pretty easy (famous last words..)
1 cup flour
1/2 cup salt
1/2 cup watermix and knead for 5 minutes and then roll out and imprint/stamp/whatever! Then bake till dry. They say at 200 for about two hours.

@knittylady: Yeah, I definitely thought about DIY too. Would be WAY cheaper too. I'd just hate to screw it up
All I'd need is some ribbon. I liked the pottery barn kit because it had a glitter option. -
@cmomma17: You can add glitter to salt dough...I think!

I did what @knittylady: is suggesting for Father's Day and they turned out great! I just used salt dough and then spray painted them with some gold spray paint I had. Much cheaper than a kit!

I bought all the stuff to make these last year when she still had tiny baby hands, and never did. Same with cinnamon ornaments. This year, I WILL CRAFT SOME THINGS.

@tlcbaby: cinnamon and applesauce are the only ingredients. They smell like heaven. You make a dough and then bake them until the are hard (usually after cutting them into a shape and cutting a hole in them).

Okay, has anyone actually successfully done these?? I feel like I;m in the midst of a Pinterest FAIL!!!!
First of all, they are huge! Guess I shouldn't have waited until LO was 6 months old? Second, they are sticky and I couldn't transfer to a baking sheet. My "recipe" was only enough to make two (again, they are HUGE).
And it said to "dry" them in the oven at 200 degrees for 5 hours? So in FIVE HOURS I'll know for sure that I failed???? HELP! -
@cmomma17: Hmm, the one I used only had them in the oven about 35-40 minutes, but at a higher temp. so they could be fine. If they are still soft, you could leave them in longer at a higher temp. and just check them often. Mine weren't very sticky, though. I used this recipe...

@tlcbaby: thanks for the link. That recipe has much more flour than salt compared to mine. Unfortunately I don't think there is anything that will help my giant baby's big beefy hands

@tlcbaby: I turned the heat up on the oven for the first two I tried. When they are close to done (and pending nap time ...) I will try to mix up the new dough an try a few more!

@cmomma17: It was pretty comical when I made mine because LO was only 8 days old.
He was asleep when I started sticking his feet into the dough, but then I had to uncurl his little fists to do the hands and he screamed through the whole thing!

I'd like to do a couple of these with my almost 4 month old-- wondering how much dough i need for each. I don't think her hands are particularly 'beefy'

@Foodnerd81: I will have to add a picture from my phone later. I did them and they turned out pretty good! I can't remember which recipe I used, I'll search for that later. I ended up adding more flour, a few spoonfuls at a time because my dough was too sticky/wet.
My LO's beefy hands allowed me to make 2 per recipe (so I made the dough twice to get 4 total).
I used a straw to punch out the whole for ribbon. My biggest tip is NOT to increase the oven heat! I was impatient and turned the oven up because I didn't want to wait hours for them to dry/harden. So those 2 turned a little brown, whoops!
